The Main Mistake: Why You Cannot Install Steel Strings

The most common and dangerous mistake beginners make is trying to find and install steel strings on a classical guitar.

The construction of instruments with a wide neck is designed exclusively for soft synthetics. Classical guitars usually do not have a heavy-duty steel truss rod inside the neck, and the soundboard and bridge themselves are held together by lightweight glue. If you string it with steel from an acoustic guitar, the extreme tension will simply warp the neck into a bow or rip the bridge off “flesh and all”.

There are only two options for classical models:

• Nylon: The absolute standard. The first three strings are clear or rectified nylon treble monofilament, and the basses feature a multi-filament nylon core wrapped in metal (most commonly silver-plated copper). They provide a warm and round sound.

• Carbon: A more modern material (fluorocarbon). These strings are thinner than nylon at the same tension, sounding significantly brighter, crisper, and having a sharp attack. They are more expensive but stand out wonderfully compared to nylon strings.

Tension Instead of Gauges

Unlike electric or acoustic packs, where thickness is written in numbers (e.g., .010-.046), classical sets are chosen by their tension level:

• Normal / Medium Tension: The sweet spot. Perfect for beginners, music school students, and home playing. They do not fatigue your fingers, and the instrument sounds well-balanced.

• Hard / High Tension: The choice for advanced guitarists. They require more pressing force but deliver a powerful, loud sound and better dynamics when playing with a pick or fingernails.
